INVITATION TO THE NON-MOTORISED TRANSPORT (NMT) AND INTERMEDIATE MEANS
OF TRANSPORT (IMT) CONFERENCE, EXHIBITION AND CYCLE RIDE 

21 TO 24 FEBRUARY 2007

Dear Colleagues, 

I am delighted to invite you to the Department of Transport's
Non-Motorised Transport and Intermediate Means of Transport Conference
and Exhibition 2007. The Department of Transport is responsible for
leading the provision of a safe, reliable, integrated, affordable and
environmentally sustainable transport system that supports the economy
and the quality of life. In light of this vision, the Department is
promoting alternative, affordable, healthy and sustainable means of
transport.

The objectives of the conference and exhibition are to:
i)   profile and create awareness of NMT/IMT
ii)  display and showcase various NMT/IMT technologies
iii)  strengthen the role of the Shova Kalula (Pedal easy) bicycle
programme

The conference theme is: "Expanding the boundaries of non-motorised and
intermediate means of transport for sustainable livelihoods". 

It is expected that a wide range of local and international experts
would share more insight and knowledge on various thematic debates and
discussions at this conference.

The conference and exhibition will be held on the 21st to 24th February
2007, at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, in the Gauteng Province.

The following are the subjects of the conference:
v       NMT policy
v       NMT legislation and regulations
v       NMT strategies
v       International best practices
v       Best practice in South Africa
v       NMT planning, engineering and Soccer World Cup 2010
v       Regional and global NMT partnerships to strengthen
sustainability
